The Cane Corso Breed: A Great Dog for You a Life of Solitude

The Cane Corso dog breed is popular on Brazilian beaches. The dog can reach as high as the Brazilian Mastiff. Males weigh around 50 kg (110 pounds) and are approximately 27 inches at the withers. Originating from Italy, the breed was originally used to guard livestock, hunt big game, and as a personal-protection dog.

Cane Corsos are great as pets and personal-protection dogs.

Breed History and Origins

Cane Corso breeders claim that the dog is a descendant of Roman war dogs. However, the dog was nearly extinct in the 1970s. This Cane Corso is the result of a breeding program that included other breeds of dogs. The resulting breed is likely to be quite different from the original.

Cane Corso Italiano has attempted to preserve many of the characteristics of the older Canes. They look very much like the old Canes from Roman times.

Physical Characteristics and Appearance

Because of his personality, the Cane Corso is strong and makes a great watchdog. This breed is muscular and large with a long muzzle and wide skull. Their hair is usually short and they are either solid black or fawn. However, they can be brindle. Their tails can be trimmed (but not too long), and their ears can either be cut short or left longer.

Editor Note It is highly controversial to do tail docking or ear cropping with dogs. Ear cropping can be done with or without anesthesia. Tail docking can usually be done without anesthesia. These practices are illegal in countries like Australia and the UK but are not regulated in the United States. These practices are necessary to maintain the breed’s character, according to the American Kennel Club. Fetch by WebMD has more information.

Can the Cane Corso be the Right Dog For Everyone?

This breed is not being promoted and I do not intend to replace the Labrador retriever. The Cane Corso, while a wonderful dog and impressive, is not recommended for anyone new to dog ownership.

Although young dogs can be easy to train, large dogs can become difficult to handle. Dogs that are not trained properly can become aggressive towards other dogs or people.

Are Cane Corso Puppies Expensive?

Although a Cane Corso puppy can be expensive, it will not cost you much more than the price of the puppy. Because he is large, he can eat a lot, requires strong fencing, and may need to have medical care. Many Cane Corso owners hire trainers to assist them with their dogs. The high costs of training can be a major reason people give up their dogs.

This breed is now recognized by the AKC and is readily available in many locations. You can also look into adopting an older dog through Petfinder.com, or a Cane breed rescue if you are unable to afford a puppy. Type the breed name and your location into the search engine. While the purchase price may vary depending on where you live, don’t forget about any additional costs.

Dog breed descriptions are only generalizations. This is how I describe the Corso because it’s how most dogs I have ever worked with behave. There is no guarantee that a dog will live a quiet life. I have had the pleasure of working with many dogs. However, this does not guarantee that every Cane Corso will behave in the same way. This is an accurate generalization and many dog trainers will tell you that the Cane Corso is “Mike Tyson in his prime“. Think about it before you buy this amazing dog.

Our Opinion

Members of this breed are natural guardians. They are suspicious of strangers, animals, and sometimes objects. It is not necessary to teach your dog to be cautious in new situations. Excessive praise and encouragement (when they are growling, or acting anxious/aggressive) can lead to an aggressive dog.

To stop your Cane Corso from being aggressive towards other dogs while he’s young, please follow the steps I have described. You can also use dog-to-dog aggressiveness methods to stop him from becoming more aggressive as he gets older. These methods are what I use to train aggressive dog dogs. However, sometimes nothing works.
